Our love for travel and different cultures, and our emphasis on socially sound business practices are the foundation from which we source our tea, coffee, and retail products.
We attempt to travel to as many of our sources as possible to assess if the estates are both mindful of the environment and their communities, and adhere to fair-trade practices. When this is not possible, we do extensive research to confirm that each source meets our high standards.
The inspiration for Tea Leaf Market began in our home where interactions over cups of tea tie together generations of memories. We continue to carry on the tradition both at home and during our travels, finding homes away from home in teahouses across the globe. Whether studying abroad in the Czech Republic or Rwanda, or traveling to Vietnam or Mexico, conversations over great cups of tea and coffee create a common thread throughout our travels and simultaneously remind us of home.
On our first excursion to India in 2010, we were welcomed by a family that prides themselves on providing excellent education, health services, and housing for their employees. Their estate in Darjeeling’s mountains produces the finest pure black tea and we have the opportunity to choose the location, altitude, and picking time of our teas in order to ensure the highest quality.
For the darkest, full-bodied Indian tea, we source from the same family’s sister estate in Assam. Assam is also the home of the Tocklai Research Institute where we’ve had the opportunity to study all aspects of growing and processing tea.
Spanning further across Asia, our time spent in teahouses in various regions of China led us to expand our selection of Chinese teas, which now include black teas from the Fujian and Yunnan regions in addition to our exquisite green favorites of Jasmine Pearl and Lung Ching Dragonwell. All of our Chinese teas are sourced from fair trade and organic estates.
Finally, expanding into the African continent, a mother/daughter trip to Rwanda allowed us to inspect tea estates for fair-trade practices and high quality products. We were excited to find an excellent green tea from the Pfunda Tea Estate, with whom we look forward to continuing to expand our partnership.
Inspired by our travels, we are proud to bring you the finest tea from India, China, Rwanda, Japan, and Turkey, plus our own proprietary blends! Please read our blog for more stories on our travels and the tea estates we source from!
